The conversion between PTO hours and workdays is straightforward, but it depends on your specific work schedule. The formula is simple:
PTO Days = PTO Hours ÷ Hours Per Workday
PTO Hours = PTO Days × Hours Per Workday
For most full-time workers on a standard schedule, one workday equals 8 hours. However, this varies:
- Standard schedule: 8 hours/day (5 days/week)
- Government/union: 7.5 hours/day
- Compressed 4/10: 10 hours/day (4 days/week)
- Part-time: 4-6 hours/day
- 9/80 schedule: Alternating 9 and 8-hour days

Special Situations
Holidays During PTO
If a company holiday falls during your scheduled PTO, most employers do not deduct PTO hours for that day. You get it "free." For example, if you take Monday through Friday off and Wednesday is a holiday, you'll only use 32 PTO hours instead of 40.
Carrying PTO Between Jobs
When comparing job offers with different PTO structures, converting everything to the same unit helps. One offer may say "15 days" while another says "128 hours." With a standard workday, 15 days = 120 hours, so the second offer actually gives you one extra day.
